The reason it’s common practice to not get tattooed while pregnant is because of the risks associated with getting a tattoo, the same risks you have when getting a tattoo while not pregnant. There is always a present risk of contracrting a blood borne pathogen infection or disease when getting a tattoo, piercing or any service that breaks the dermis layer of the skin. Pathogens like Hepatitis B and C, HIV, and Syphilis just to name a few. While the risk is significantly lower when going to a professional artist, as they are certified by OSHA and practice safe handling and decontamination of bodily fluid, the risks do still exist. So the common practice is to not expose your unborn to those pathogens especially if you are not aware of the artists certification and licensing. In addition there just aren’t enough studies done about the affect of tattoo inks on unborn babies during pregnancy. There are multiple brands which means an endless list of contaminates and ingredients and the work just hasn’t been done yet to see how that can affect fetus/unborn babies.
